The Pencil Problem

My students need a couple reliable electric pencil sharpeners with some pencils that will not break.

My Students

All day long my students are sharpening or hunting for pencils that work. All teachers know this problem; it's a constant struggle. And it's not their fault, it's mine. They have terrible pencils that break all the time and then there is no good sharpener for them. It's time to solve the problem!

My students love school.

They love to write, to do math, and to record their thinking about their reading. They love learning about history and doing science. Unfortunately, a lot of this valuable time is wasted with sharpening pencils. It may sound ridiculous, but it really is a problem. Crummy pencils break easily and then don't sharpen well, especially with the crummy pencil sharpeners I've had in the past. I went through three, electric pencil sharpeners last year. I can't afford to keep this up! These pencil sharpeners were recommended to me by some of my colleagues because they have a TEN YEAR warranty. That is ten years that we don't have to worry about this problem. If - and I'm guessing when - these things go out, all we need to do is give the company a call and they will send us a new one. These kids are in a low income school, and work really hard. They deserve the best and I want to give it them. This will really help them get the most out of their education.

My Project

These pencils and sharpeners will be used more than any other project that I can think of. In general, most materials used in classrooms are used during specific times. Pencils are used ALL the time. It is so important to have good ones and be able to sharpen them quickly so that the students can get back to work. Unfortunately, my students can't afford good pencils and I can't afford a good pencil sharpener. This pencil problem is not widely known, but ask any teacher and the odds are good that they either have a pencil problem or they will tell you how they solved their problem. I hope to be able to do the latter soon, but right now, I'm stuck with a problem.

My students will get so much more learning out of their days if they don't have to constantly be searching for pencils that work and sharpening over and over again to get a good sharpen.

Our classroom environment will be calmer and a better place to learn.
