As we work to become proficient writers, we are writing as much as possible every single day. Fortunately, this means that our writing skills are blossoming before our eyes. Unfortunately, this means that we are sharpening through pencils at an alarming rate!
My students attend a Title I school in Indiana.
Because of our school's past history of low standardized test scores, my students are under constant testing scrutiny. Our upcoming state test provides a chance for my students to show what they know after having worked hard all year, but this is not the full picture of their bright, curious minds. We are working hard to improve literacy by building writing stamina. Whether we are writing personal narratives, persuasive essays, or captivating fictional stories, my students need pens and pencils as tools to fuel their creativity and intelligence as writers.
My Project
Many of my students struggle to provide writing utensils in class each day, often through no fault of their own. (Parents are unable to purchase appropriate supplies.) While we are working to reinforce personal responsibility, we also acknowledge the fact that middle school students may need an extra boost from us to be successful. Your contribution of pens and pencils will help us to sustain a middle school system of accountability that provides students with the materials they need to participate fully in class while encouraging them to take care of those materials with a system of merits and demerits. Rather than wasting valuable learning time swapping ID cards to borrow pencils, we can focus on improving our mastery of skills. Strong writing ability is a key lever in each student's ability to retain information and to share that information with others. Colored paper helps us to stay organized and to maintain bright, engaging class materials.
You can help us by providing something that many students take for granted: the opportunity to write as much as we desire without worrying about running out of lead!
Thank you for providing the basic supplies that help our classroom run efficiently and for encouraging us to find our identities as strong writers.
