Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This is my first year teaching, and I have already found that Kindergarten comes with a mix of emotions for both parents and students alike. For some, this is the first time their child will be away from them, in a setting that is unfamiliar. Children enter kindergarten with vastly different schooling experiences as well. Many have been to pre-school or Tk, and for others, this will be the very first classroom they step foot in. L Elementary School is a K-5 school that hosts a variety of different families that come from all walks of life.
My kindergarten students show me every year how uniquely different we are from one another.
They all bring something different to the table, due to the diverse backgrounds they have. They come from all walks of life, but they all have one thing in common, and that is my classroom. They are all students in Ms. L's classroom, and they are all L Leopards.
My Project
My students are divided into four math groups that each meet with me every day during math workshop time. During this time, they receive instruction in their small group of about 5 students. Because I teach Kindergarten, small group instruction is the most effective delivery method in many cases. While I meet with each group, the rest of my students are playing math games.
Math games are an engaging and unique way for the Kindergarteners in my class to practice and apply the skills they are currently learning in the classroom.
The materials in this project not only engage students, but reach all learners. They are games from Instant Learning Center that focus on addition, subtraction, and number bonds. There are also visuals, things for students to hold and manipulate (such as the gel bead sensory shapes!), opportunities for students to engage in collaborative collaboration, all while playing games. Keeping the interest and attention of students at this young age can be challenging, but with these math games students will be able to focus as they are completely engaged!
