Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In my classroom 90% of the students are economically disadvantaged, where school is sometimes the safest space for them. It is important that they feel their school has the resources they need to learn because this may be the only place they have the exposure. As society quickly moves along with technology, my students need to experience the latest technology that incorporates their math knowledge and skills.
Many of my students feel that their past test scores define who they are as a "math student," and my goal is to show them that with proper resources they still have the ability to succeed in the math classroom.
As I hear them discuss with each other, it is apparent that they have been told or convinced that they are not "math students" and my goal is to expose them to various methods to find the answers. My purpose is to expand their knowledge of problem solving skills so that they can apply their skills to real world problems they encounter.
My Project
Expo markers will be by the students on their personal whiteboards to ensure quick student responses and checks for understanding. The notecards will be used to increase their mathematic vocabulary in the classroom.
I make all of my students complete guided Cornell notes, which I personally create and update each year, so printer paper is essential for their success in the classroom.
These Cornell notes are put in a binder that is used by the students as their own "textbook" in their own handwriting.
The file folders will be used for data. Students will track mastery on each state standard after quizzes and exams. Each student will conduct meetings to reflect on their growth and determine their own steps to reach the mastery level on each standard.
