My Students

Curious, creative, and clever -- these are a few words to describe my fourth-grade students. My students come from diverse cultures and backgrounds and include Gifted and Talented Students, English language learners, and students with special needs. They are all unique in their own way which is what makes our school community an inviting and accepting place for all. My students are thriving in fourth grade!

My Project

I am requesting books that celebrate lesser-known historical figures, trailblazers, and innovative immigrants who were influential in California history to include all.

While setting out on a walk the other day, I searched for a Podcast on history for kids and I struck gold!

This project is inspired by the The Past and The Curious - A History Podcast for Kids and Families. The podcast features people in history who faced discrimination yet found opportunities in the American West such as Levi Strauss. Another unsung hero, Charley Willis, who was a cowboy, once enslaved and who was impacted by the events of Juneteenth. Also Stagecoach Mary, a trailblazing African American women, who helped settle the American West.

You won't find these people in our Social Studies textbook but by integrating multiple sources such as the podcast and books such as, Levi Strauss Gets a Bright Idea: A Fairly Fabricated Story of a Pair of Pants and Black Heroes of the Wild West, my fourth graders will be introduced to more than what the textbook has to offer.

As an educator, I want to guide and facilitate my fourth graders to read with a critical lens, to be thinkers and changers, to recognize that not all stories are told nor are all historical figures represented in our textbooks and to to see themselves reflected in the curriculum.

I strive to offer an inclusive look into our past by highlighting diverse people who helped shape our state. I want to guide my students to build a deeper understanding of events that transformed this country and allow all students to realize that people who look like them played a significant role in our history. Many of these historical figures and unsung heroes featured in the books are often overlooked and unnoticed. Let's shine a light on these heroes by reading books that celebrate their triumphs and let my students see themselves reflected in our history.
