My project needs
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am a first year English teacher in the District of Columbia's inner city. Most of my students live in public housing, are elidgible for free or reduced lunches, and deal with issues that should be left to adults. I am requesting a class set (60 copies) of the novel "The Outsiders", so that these children will be able to enjoy a book that resolves some of the same issues that they are stuggling with. "The Outsiders" has always been a novel that resonates with teenagers. Although it was written over thirty years ago, students still view it as a story that is relevant to their lives. The themes of this book include peer pressure, fitting in, and the hardships of growing up; obstacles that teenagers face everyday. The novel also deals with stereotypes and class structure. I believe that middle school students should know about and discuss problems like this; hopefully, to help lessen bulling and prejudice. The students who will be reading this novel will especially relate because they also have to deal with issues such as gangs and family problems. By reading the novel and discussing these tough issues, students might think twice before joining a gang or running away. The book doesn’t glorify gangs or violence and actually shows the problems associated with them. Heroism is also seen throughout the novel, and students will be able to discuss what makes a hero. They would have to decide what they consider to be right or wrong, something that everyone needs to understand for themselves.
