As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
Many of my students are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status.
These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
New and updated playground equipment will provide our preschool students with daily opportunities for rich use of language and creativity while developing social awareness.
New play equipment will foster peer collaboration during play and will provide our students opportunities to work through social roadblocks.
Years of research tells us that structured play is critical in developing language skills, empathy, social skills, higher levels of thinking, less aggression, and even relieves stress. We want to offer our students a clean, engaging, and safe outdoor environment to help them develop all of these critical skills. Students will work together to plant and nurture plants that attract butterflies using the soil and the seeds. This will help to make our outdoor garden into a magical space. Along with the fun of getting dirty, gardening helps children learn valuable lessons about patience as they wait for vegetables to grow, responsibility as they see how necessary their care is to the garden, and even loss when flowers die at the end of a season. By using the gardening gloves it gives them a better chance to really dig in the dirt and plant. With the lawnmower they can pretend to cut the grass. The waterfall wall gives them and oppurtunity to enjoy some water play while it’s hot outside.
