As a teacher and gardener, I am always looking to further my students' opportunities to learn directly through contact with nature. At this time there are no resources provided through my school district for potting soil, seeds, or flats of flowers, vegetables and strawberries. Our school garden area remains neglected, while it has the potential for thriving as an outdoor "Life Lab". All children learn across all curriculum areas when taking responsibility for establishing and harvesting a garden. While I have been able to carry this plan out in the past with the sixty children in grades kindergarten through 2ND at Sequoia, resources are unavailable at the present time. Besides integrations of curriculum across science, literacy, art, math and music, Garden Science fosters the growth of self-esteem and responsibility. A magical and powerful connection is made in the young child to see the connection between nourishment, nurture and growth. This also develops patience and respect for the cycles of life.
