Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Si se puede" is the slogan we have in my transitional bilingual classroom in Trenton, New Jersey. By providing opportunities for students of diverse cultural and economic backgrounds, these curious learners can believe that their goals are possible to achieve.
All my students have immigrated to the United States to access both the economic and educational advantages that exist here.
Their limited English proficiency is not limiting their desire to learn. They are eager to learn the required curriculum as they are developing skills in the English language.
These students have been in the country for no more than three years, and most have been here for less than a year. It is important that they participate in engaging and authentic activities to acquire their new language with confidence. As their teacher, I strive to provide them with an educational environment that fosters this growth!
My Project
My students are Americans. Even though they migrated to the United States, they are from the Americas. Each one of them is connected to history because they are Mestizos. They are a mixture of Native and European cultures.
Using the story Encounter, students will examine how new cultures grew from the early explorations and colonization of the Americas.
They need to understand how they were impacted by the historical events of exploration and colonization. Their existence is due to the choice the Europeans made when they began to settle in the areas they chose to explore. This will then lead to how I, their teacher, was impacted by the early colonization of North America. How my existence too is dependent on past historical events. This connect the past with our present and issues we face today.
