Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My sixth-grade students are explorers and learners. They are excited to discover different ways math can be used in the real-world and are engaged in STEM learning throughout their school day.
My students are creative problem solvers, and my classroom is a place for them to experience learning in a hands-on environment.
Our school is located in the center of a large city, and many students face challenges of uncertainty at home, including issues of economic instability and immigration status. In the classroom, I strive to create a positive learning environment in which students can engage with STEM through real-world projects. I encourage my students to work together and think creatively, and I hope to foster a life-long love of learning and math.
My Project
Math can be a challenging topic for students to engage with, but origami is active and exciting, and it provides an avenue for students to learn math in an interactive way.
Origami helps students explore and understand ratios, angles, shapes, area, proportions, and fractions; all while having fun folding different shapes and patterns.
My students love origami lessons - they make special requests for origami and are always asking for more! The only challenge is finding paper for folding.
The whiteboard sleeves will allow students to analyze origami directions. They can check off steps and make notes as they fold. The sleeves will also allow multiple students to use the same set of instructions; saving copies and copy paper.
