My students need 11books at different levels so that they may all access information about an orchestra including book titles such as "Mr. Putter and Tabby Toot the Horn" and "Remarkable Farkle McBride".
Music is said to be the universal language because it touches everyone. I teach a group of third and fourth graders at an inner city school. The children come from a high need community. It is my goal to give them experiences in the classroom that they may not get anywhere else.
Most of my students do not listen to orchestra music, nor have they attended a concert put on by the local orchestra. I plan to help them understand and, hopefully, appreciate the orchestra through a storyline. In the storyline the children will become "members" of the orchestra. They will learn about the instruments, the sections of the orchestra and real life application in solving problems that might occur for an orchestra member.
In order for this story line to be effective, I need resources to share with them. I need books that show photographs of instruments, stories that tell about the orchestra and it all needs to be a multiple reading levels to accommodate the span of reading levels in my classroom.
