This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am requesting a classroom set of this book so that my students will be exposed to common core complex texts. This is a story that all of them will love!
While I have the district provided reading textbook, I would like to supplement my students' reading with high quality common core texts.
My students do not otherwise have access to this type of text, as few have books at home, and few are taken to the public library. It is important that we expose them to complex texts in the classroom. My students love to read and deserve the chance to read what their peers in other schools are reading.
My Project
My students need a classroom set of the Common Core text: The One-Eyed Giant, by Mary Pope Osborn. This set of books can be used in three ways. The more advanced readers can read the book on their own or with the on-level readers in small groups. All students can read the book in whole group work. Even the struggling readers will benefit greatly as they will be able to listen to the richness of the text, the rhythm of the writing, and the in-context vocabulary.
Giving my students a chance at reading books such as this one will increase their love of reading and help to put them on a level playing field with their more affluent peers.
This type of book leads to engaged reading and good classroom discussion. They will be hooked on the story!
