My second graders are like typical 7 and 8-year olds. They like to socialize, explore and learn about new topics they have never been exposed to. They are interested in learning about the world and creatures around them. Unfortunately, many of their experiences, opportunities and resources are limited because their families are working hard to provide for their families.
I teach 17 wonderful children who are eager to learn.
My school is a Title I school in a military town. We have several families with a parent deployed or have moved several times in one school year. My students were impacted by Hurricane Florence. Many of them are still dealing with the devastating impact it had on our state. There are still houses that are covered with tarps, dry wall and flooring that needs to be replaced and several people are displaced.
My Project
We currently have old blue chairs in my classroom that have been here since before I started teaching at this school ten years ago. The students constantly trip over the chairs. They do not look like traditional chairs with legs. The chairs have loops on the legs which stick out causing the students to trip when they are trying to move throughout the classroom. New chairs would look great with the new tables we got through another DonorsChoose project. They are color coded to match the tables. These chairs would provide a safer classroom for the students to move around in.
