Help me give my students books that they are really excited about reading like those from the more popular series (Harry Potter, Diary of a Wimpy Kid) so they will keep reading during the summer!
As the school counselor I consider each and every student in the school to be one of "my students". We are a Title One school so many of my students come from poor families and they do not have the same opportunities and resources as other children. Some families are struggling to just meet the basic needs of our students.
Despite this they all have a strong desire to learn and love of reading!
It brings so much joy to me when I see them excited to get new books!
My Project
With the books donated my students will be able to keep reading over the summer. The will develop a love of reading and prevent their reading levels from dropping over the summer. By providing a variety of books for them to choose at the book fair I can ensure that they are choosing books of interest to them that they will want to read.
Every year the students' faces light up at the book fair.
They cannot believe they are free for them to keep! For some students these will be the only books they own. When they have a chance to later "pay it forward" they will get to experience for them selves the incredible joy of giving to others even less fortunate then themselves.
