My Project

Most of my students come to school with an empty stomach, and far too many go through the entire school day, if not longer, on an empty stomach. I’ve been shocked from talking to athletes who even go to practice without having eaten all day!

If their most basic needs aren’t being met, how can they come close to achieving their full potential?

I started the Healthy Snacks program so that students can get something healthy to eat without having to earn it through my behavior incentive program. Because ALL kids deserve to have food in their bellies. When kids come to ask me for a snack, it gives us a chance to have a genuine interaction, where they come to me and ask me for food, and they know they’ll get a smile, they’ll get asked about their day, and they’ll have a snack placed in their hand. For some, this may be the greatest level of care they experience that day.

When I started, I was buying all the snacks myself, but the program quickly grew to the point where I needed funding. The items I’ve chosen here are some of their favorites: Nature Valley granola bars, cheese or peanut butter crackers, nuts (and a quick lecture on the importance of protein), and it should be enough to last the rest of this semester (until the beginning of June).
