Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are an amazing source of inspiration and wonderment! I work at a special needs school where the students have varying abilities. Each student is curious and has a love of learning.

Music is a beautiful and powerful means of expression for my students.

I hope to promote lifelong learning for students through the use of socially focused, multi-modal and inclusive music curricula.

Many of my students are nonverbal and communicate in nontraditional ways. Music gives my students a voice.

My Project

The ability to hear oneself in real time is powerful. It can help students to reach speech related goals, it can bring students enjoyment and it can even help to validate that students' voice or existence. This is why I would like to add microphones to my classrooms.

Microphones have a powerful impact on those of us who are still learning to use our voices.

Many of my nonverbal students, when given a microphone, are more likely to make sounds, words or even sing. I would like to help them access that voice everyday in my music classes.

Unfortunately microphones will not sound on their own. This is why I am also hoping to get amplifiers in my classrooms. Amplifiers will be a way to amplify the students' voices. Amplifiers will also be a way to play music aloud in my classes and on the go.
