Hooray! This project is fully funded

The Next Generation of "Freedom Writers" Coming Soon! I teach 9th Grade English and Reading Intervention. Half of my students are mild-moderate Special Education and all come from a high-need community.

The daily struggle my students face has been with them all their lives. They live in Crenshaw; just a few blocks from Culver City, Los Angeles. Their zip codes have determined their fate. I want my students to test their fate and create a pathway towards an unbelievable future, a future that includes self-sufficiency whether they move onto college or a job. My students are in the 9th grade yet, on average, they are reading at a 4th grade reading level. It was difficult to inspire my students to want to read and write until we watched the movie "Freedom Writers." It was the last motivational trick I could think of!

Now, my students tell me "Miss, you're low key like Ms. G from the movie." I aspire to move my students the way she did through the use of a simple journal. Through writing their feelings each day, my students will be able to release the daily struggles they go through. Just like "The Freedom Writers," my students will be able to motivate and empower themselves through writing. Not only can the project bring class unity but, also, by the end of the year, my students will be proud of THEMSELVES to see how much they have written in one place.

Your help will ensure my student's pride in themselves. Please donate for a better future for the next generation of "Freedom Writers."
