The New Me: Social/Emotional Learning in the Classroom!

My students need resources such as an Idea book, The Can in Cancer so they can have visual/auditory ways to learn new skills. My teachers/parents need ways to have engaging/fun ways to integrate social emotional learning into their environments.

My Students

The students I support are in Kindergarten - 6th grade and need additional social, emotional and behavioral support in order to be successful in the school setting. Most of the students that I support are living at the poverty level, have an identified or unidentified disability and/or have experienced some form of traumatic event in their life. They need specific teaching of skills in order to grow behaviorally, socially and emotionally. This learning occurs at home, in the general education classrooms and in my classroom, which is the Student Support Center.

The Student Support Center is a supportive, safe place to learn and grow as a child, teacher and parent.

We support approximately 800 students with their academic, behavioral, social and emotional needs. First, we are a support to students who need to learn new skills so that they integrate into their classrooms, participate with peers and ultimately are successful in social aspects of their lives as adults. Next, we are a resource to teachers, helping them understand our students and build their capacity to teach and reinforce social/emotional skills in their classrooms. Last, we are a resource to parents who have children that need our support.

My Project

The materials that I am requesting will allow our school to include social/emotional learning in the general education classrooms as well as provide additional resources for our parents, support staff and school mental health staff. Children love books and enjoy stories and people that they can relate too. These books will be an invaluable resource for our students and the adults in our school.

Teachers will be able to use these books and activities during read aloud times and they will be able to integrate skills into their curriculum that may otherwise not be included.

The simple activities will be engaging and fun for students, parents and teachers and will hopefully lead way to conversation and rapport among all members of each community. Through this resource it is my hope that social/emotional growth will occur in our students.
