Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Challenges for my students means:
C=coping with failure & low self esteem
H=hectic lives
A=alternatives required to learn
L=learning disabilities
L=language barriers
E=enjoy too much TV
N=need support & monitoring
G=gaps in academic skills
E=enjoy too many video games
S=struggling to meet goals
My students are special education 4th and 5th graders attending a public school.
My class is energetic, eager to learn, and want to succeed. They have many talents and strengths in the arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and physical education. Some are artistically creative, some are out-of the-box thinkers, some love to experiment, and others are extremely social and compassionate. They try hard, but they struggle all along the way. My students have oral and receptive language and vocabulary deficits, with reading and writing challenges that limit their perspective and awareness of the possibilities that exist for their future, because they can't always access materials that will inspire them to explore new worlds.
My Project
Time for Kids is written for children by children to motivate, challenge, and inspire. 35 copies will allow my students to collaborate with a general education classroom. Both classes will learn from each other because they can relate to the content in this publication. Groups of students can focus on one article and report back to the other students. Oral presentations improve language and comprehension because they must retell and critique the information. They can work in groups to complete the comprehension activities, and do research. Time for Kids also has activities on line which students can access in our school computer lab. My students feel empowered by working alongside their peers and their self esteem skyrockets as a result. They will also learn about international and national events, scientific breakthroughs, and different cultures. Time for Kids is a great resource because it gives them "eyes" to see how they can shape their future and make the world a better place.
This project is continuous throughout the school year and will definitely impact their education and social development.
Politics, Environment, World Peace, Education, Crime, Entertainment, Sports, Science, Arts, Government, Technology, etc.--If you have questions about or interests in these areas, then support this project because my students are the future citizens that will enter these fields, support your interests, and answer your questions. Make a difference and help create the future.
