I am a fourth grade teacher at a Title 1 elementary school in Houston. Over 200 of our 800 students have come to us courtesy of Hurricane Katrina. Seventeen of these students are in my classroom. The majority of my students are labeled "at-risk". This means they have not learned what is generally expected of students at their age and grade level. Since reading is critical to learning in every other subject, I am particularly focusing on reading skills this semester. To assist in this, I would like to request classroom sets of three books; "The New Kid on the Block", "Shrek", and "Sylvester and the Magic Pebble". Having classroom sets of these books, which are recommended reading for fourth grade, would allow each child their own copy to read in class, to take home and to read-along in classroom read aloud sessions. Although I have books for individual reading, having the class read the same book together is a very important reinforcement, especially since many of these children have never read chapter books before.
