I am the proud teacher of 24 smiling, energetic, happy learners. Within this class, I have a large variety of students in my class. In fact, out of 24 students I have nine students who receive special education services. Additionally, I have three students who receive advanced academic enrichment as well. As you can imagine teaching such a wide range of students presents some challenges such as having materials that are accessible for all.
I want each of my students to become a lifelong learner.
I believe students are able to do this by taking charge of their learning. In my classroom I use flexible seating. With flexible seating the students feel ownership for their classroom. Additionally, they get to choose a seat that they will learn best in. When students have choice they become more independent, responsible and accountable. for every aspect of the day students can choose where they want to sit. This might be on a yoga ball, wobble stool, pillow or on the carpet with a clipboard. With flexible seating, students are comfortable, can wiggle, wobble, and move as they learn without worrying! My students love that they are free to be themselves.
My Project
As this is my first year as a teacher, I am still in the process of building my classroom library and my students have a need to read!
I have never met a group of students who are so engaged in independent reading.
My kiddos are constantly asking for more time to read and they are always searching for new books. But I am struggling to find books on many different reading levels. Their reading levels vary from a level 16-40. With more books, my students will have the opportunity to find what is just right for them. Many of these books will be put directly into our classroom library for students to read during independent reading time or borrow for awhile and take it home.
The STEM books are amazing! After a survey, I found most of my kids are interested in these topics. In this same survey I found that I do not have any STEM books currently in my room. I would also like the opportunity to use these books to support my teaching in a variety of subjects.
