This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students of UHS in Newark, NJ., come from a diverse set of cultures and economic backgrounds. They are all, however, subject to the challenges that urban life in America can present, and we, as educators, are responsible for providing them with a proper education that will lead to personal and professional success.
I have the honor of teaching a group of unique and spirited teenagers who tackle life's most unfair challenges on a daily basis.
My job is to provide them the skills and confidence to face these challenges with courage and conviction.
My Project
I am a firm believer that everyone likes to read. Most often, the problem is finding something fun to read. Schools understandably spend time focusing on the classics, but there are great books published each year.
Our kids need to be exposed to novels that are diverse, fresh, and of high interest.
That's why I am asking for your help in funding this project. Together we can add some life to a dusty bookshelf so we can get our kids reading.
I have identified 15 novels that reflect the diversity in my classroom. People tend to enjoy stories that they can relate to or imagine themselves in. My goal is to foster a lifelong love of reading.
