Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The 2008-2009 Journalism class is a re-vamped class that has been started over from scratch! The class consists of 9-12 graders interested in print or broadcast journalism. We are an equity-one school and of the lower-economic standing. We are a magnet school, but we're located in a high-need community that is often negatively stereotyped because of the population that lives here.

I was given the Journalism class this year which had an extremely poor foundation and representation the previous years; I suppose you could say it was relatively non-existent because we have not had a monthly newspaper or news broadcast for the past four years. That being said, I came into this class to find out there was no funding, no supplies, no technology, and no foundation to work off of. Therefore, my students and I have worked extremely hard to re-create the Journalism class, creating a new newspaper format, news show broadcast, and struggling to do so with the limited technology we have for our class. We are currently using the media center's outdated cameras that turn off and delete photos on a regular basis. Because this is the first year that the Journalism class has really been in motion and because we are a lower economical school, funding is relatively non-existent. Likewise, because the Journalism class has been "re-vamped," there have been high expectations to see great things from the paper and news show. It has been very hard for the students and me to work and get these productions finished with no supplies (digital cameras, video cameras, scanners, computer programs, etc.)

With these cameras and supplies, my students will be able to be successful in taking photographs for our new school newspaper and finally show off their skills and shine! The Mustang Tribune, our new school newspaper which the students have worked hard to start and create from scratch, and Mustang Television, our new news broadcast, would benefit highly from working digital cameras and accessories. I am extremely confident that if the students had their own equipment to use for our Journalism class, they would be more motivated to get out there and take photos since the technology would be more modern and actually work correctly. Right now, we're struggling to get the paper and news show out because of our lack of funding and working technology. I know these students have more to show but are just being held back by these limitations! If we can get some assistance and around this road block, I am sure my students will be able to show their true talents in Journalism!

When I took over this class, I was given nothing - no supplies, no contacts, no money. The kids work extremely hard to sell ads for our paper and participate in fundraisers in order to get the newspaper printed, but by the time we pay for the printing, there is no money left over to get the supplies we need! Please help my kids so they can be successful in this class. Helping my students get these supplies will not only benefit the individual students, but also the school and county as they will be able to enjoy these wonderful productions that the students have created! Please help my students show their true colors!
