My school is a K-12 Charter school located outside of Charleston, South Carolina. My 9-12 students are filled with students from all different backgrounds and varying abilities. Our quarter two focus is: Environmental Awareness. My hope is to provide our high students with a strong integration of Science, Mat, and MUSIC to create a STEAM classroom! Our related arts team strives to make our students' learning meaningful and authentic experiences that will feed their knowledge and give them the foundation to be successful in their academic career and inquiry.
Our 9-12 students are eager to learn, enthusiastic, and have a hunger for more STEAM activities!
For this project, my students want to study the effects of different instrumental music on plants in their environment. This project will specifically help our high students that are becoming college and career ready and will hopefully create their path in the science, technology, math, or music industry.
Our school is committed to providing all students a safe and exceptional academic environment that cultivates independent learning, character enrichment, and regional awareness while developing accountable leaders, community stewards, and diverse thinkers through project-based learning.
My Project
This year, my passionate high school students have shown an interest in integrating music and science together. My students are working hard to succeed through inquiry and research on new interests to them within science, the arts, and in math. I want to provide a unique way of combining their eagerness and interest with academics!
I would love to be able to have a variety of musical instruments brought into my classroom to study the effects that music has on the growth of plants native to our Lowcountry area!
This would truly bring their learning to life. By having a piano, percussion drum, and Xylo Bells in my room, my students will have the opportunity to create sounds that follow the Gullah Culture of the Lowcountry to see if the music would increase the production of foliage, flora, and stem of a plant.
This is an opportunity that my students have requested through their research! A piano will not only be a great addition for student's to learn new music, but also a way to continue their perseverance in learning a hard concept. By providing different plants for them to study they can make connections to horticulture, environmental science, and biology. I hope this opportunity of research and inquiry will instill the love of music, math, and science. But more importantly, I hope it will prepare them for college and the ability to inquire and experiment more of things that are of interest to them.
