Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Title 1 middle school with a high-needs population. The students at our school come with challenges and trauma yet are resilient and persevere every day here at school. Our school’s Green Team which consists of 20 dedicated students who care about our environment and spend after school educating our school community on human activities that affect our environment and advocate for more sustainable practices on campus.
Many of our students do not have the financial means to explore nature.
Parents are working hard, sometimes even two jobs, to provide for their families and the rising cost of housing in our area. Majority of these students have never seen snow or explored the beautiful national park of Yosemite.
My Project
Our school’s Green Team would love the opportunity to participate in the Yosemite Nature Bridge program. Our Green Team consists of 20 students in grades 6-8. Our Green Team’s mission is to educate our school community on human activities that affect our environment and advocate for more sustainable practices on campus. Last year, our Green Team took a field trip to our local recycling center and came back inspired to start a composting program. Now we have two composting bins with a goal to start a garden with our compost soil.
By participating in the Yosemite Nature Bridge program, our Green Team will be exposed to the winter climate with snow, which we don’t get here in the Bay Area.
This will broaden their lens and world view on the impact of climate change beyond their community. Through this program, our students will be able to meet Life Science objectives to analyze natural and human made disruptions to ecosystems and how those impacts can shift populations; examine human activities that have played a role in causing the rise in global temperatures; and gather information on ways we, as a school community, can reduce our impact on our natural resources.
