Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first grade in an inner city school in North Carolina. We are a Title I school where over 74% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. We educate students from Kindergarten through fifth grade.
My first graders are kind, creative, hard working and love learning.
They come to school every day excited to see what the day has in store for them.
Our school has a very diverse population of students who are working at all ability levels.
My Project
Our class needs a leveled library full of books that they can access.
"The more that you read, the more things you will know.
The more that you learn, the more places you'll go!" - Dr. Seuss
Part of my job as an early elementary school teacher is to teach reading. I have learned that the only way to teach reading is to teach students how to love books. My goal is for every student to be able find books daily in our classroom that are just right for them. In order to help my students dive head first into the wonderful world of reading I need to have a library of books that cover a wide range of reading levels and interests. When students come to my classroom their ability levels range from beginning reading skills to readers that are a grade level or more beyond first grade.
When the Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement compared the reading skills of 210,000 students from 32 different countries, it found the highest scores (regardless of income level) among children who were read to by their teachers daily and who read the most pages for pleasure daily.
Once the students have these just books in their hands, I can encourage, nurture and build students’ love for reading.
