My students need a mobile storage cart to store our lending library books and some bins to hold and organize the books that the students will browse through and borrow.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
AS School is located in Newark, New Jersey. There are approximately 1400 students at AS from Pre-Kindergarten to 8th Grade. At AS, we pride ourselves on our rigorous academic standards and achievements and in developing a culture of respect and an aspiration to achieve. As a result, our school is one of the highest performing schools in Newark.
Many families of students at our school are new immigrants from countries all around the world with a high immigrant population from countries such as Ecuador and Brazil.
Most of the students who attend our school are English Language Learners. Many students speak 2 or more languages at home; predominantly Spanish or Portuguese.
The second-grade students in my classroom are bilingual with 50% of my class receiving pull out ESL services. Most of my students come from lower income families and receive free breakfast and lunch due to their socio-economic status. They love coming to school every day to learn and have many dreams of becoming successful in their futures.
My Project
Reading is a crucial skill needed in order for children to become successful in the future. As a teacher, I want to ensure that my students develop a love and habit of reading at home every day with their loved ones. This is especially difficult for my students who have limited funds and oftentimes do not have transportation to travel to the library or bookstores around the city. Therefore, 5 years ago when I became a second-grade teacher, I started a classroom library in our room.
Our classroom lending library has been growing as I purchase new and exciting books for my second graders and we have run out of room to store all these wonderful books.
The book storage cart I have is overflowing with books which makes it hard for my students to browse and find books that are not only interesting but appropriate for their reading level. This storage unit and bins will help to make sure that the students have a vast array of books to choose from.
