My students are faced with making huge gains in their literacy skills in order to be on-grade level readers.
They need to be engaged and involved in their learning in such a way it can't help but interest with them.
My students are the bravest people I know. My students know more about life at the age of 10 than I did at 18. They face difficult circumstances and challenges I can only imagine. Yet, every morning they wake up, get themselves ready, walk themselves to school or catch the bus, and have a seat in my classroom ready to learn.
I teach in a Title 1 school with a 60% Free & Reduced Lunch Population. The majority of my students are significantly behind in reading. Many of their parents didn't finish school themselves. Reading is not necessarily a part of their life styles.
My Project
These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My classroom library is a place that my students will really enjoy-I read on the carpet to them, they complete work there, and they read independently! Every student book that is placed in my library is treated with love and care, and they are thankful for the opportunities to read. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind. Students will be able to choose books, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time.
These books will provide students with an opportunity to practice reading skills and strategies during independent reading.
Reading workshop each day begins with a mini-lesson with my students through a shared reading experience. Then students need these more engaging texts for their independent time.
