Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first graders are emergent, bilingual students that come from different countries in Latin America. In our classroom, we learn both in Spanish and English. Everyday my students work really hard in reaching their long-term goal of becoming fluent in both languages. I believe my students are really special because most of them had to leave their native country to come live here. Though it is not an easy transition, my students make the best out of coming to school here. My students understand the importance of receiving a good education and they are sure to take advantage of that opportunity.
My Project
The books I chose for this project are a variety of different levels that are needed for my students. Though this is first-grade, some of the students that come to my class have never been in school before. These books will give my students an opportunity to increase their reading skills so that they can surpass their reading level goals. I also chose books for my advanced readers so that they can improve their reading comprehension skills and continue to grow.
These books will also be used for students to read at home with their families.
It is very difficult for parents to find books in Spanish at a low price. With these books, students will have the chance to check out a book of their choice to take home and read with their parents or siblings. This also gives my lower level readers a chance to enjoy some of the higher level books by having it read to them at home. In my project, I also included plastic tote bags for the books that are taken home. These tote bags will help students keep our books safe and prevent any damages.
