This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our middle school students are eager to read (regardless of their reading levels).
Last school year, our high school (grades 9-12) gained a middle school population (grades 6-8) due to the closing of the neighboring middle school.
We are now the only middle/high school in our district.
The addition of the middle school has its challenges. One is that many of our middle school students are below their grade level in reading.
My Project
Scholastic Action Magazine is an excellent resource that reaches struggling readers. The nonfiction articles pique students’ interests with relevant, real-world information. The best part is each article is written on 3 different reading levels allowing the reading to be tailored to a student’s individual level.
Our student will participate in a variety of activities based on what they read such as interactive quizzes, videos, vocabulary games, and text-to-speech audio articles.
I have used a sample copy of the magazine with some of our students and the response to the articles and activities was remarkable.
Action magazine will help motivate our students to read.
When the students are motivated, they will experience success in the classroom, on mandated state tests, and have increased self-confidence.
