Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical classroom day is full of mandated lessons in math, writing, and reading of anthologies. I want my students go beyond that and to delve into the magical world of books, to get lost in a story, and to feel empathy for the characters and translate that to real life experiences.
Our school is in the Central Valley of California.
It is situated in a commuter community.
I teach third grade and it is definitely a wonderful age group to teach. They are curious, funny, and imaginative. As third graders improve their reading skills, there is a transition from picture books into chapter books.
My Project
My students will use the requested materials as an introduction to literature reading. The chapter book, Because of Winn Dixie will be used as a whole class literature circle. The students will make inferences about the characters. They will be exposed to different family units. They will learn about giving people second chances. They will learn about the bond between people and animals. Most importantly, they will read for the enjoyment of reading!
My project will improve my classroom because it will give students access to reading materials.
Instead of having one copy of the book, students will each have their own to borrow, to follow along, to read together and unwind near the ending of the school day.
