My preschoolers come from a variety of backgrounds. Located in a diverse town, our classroom is made up of several cultures and needs. Thirty-eight percent of my class has special needs ranging from autism to developmental delays.
We practice mindfulness on a daily basis to increase our empathy and kindness.
We also care for our class pets, Gus Gus and Jaq (pet mice) to learn about responsibility! We love to have visits from animals and anyone who can help us learn and grow!
We have math and literacy nights for families to help bridge learning to home and also have had a morning of mindfulness complete with yoga and even a therapy dog! Family involvement is crucial to our classroom's success!
My Project
Using a listening center during our school day will allow my preschoolers to sit and follow along to a read-aloud all by themselves! The listening center will promote holding a book properly, turning the pages, reading/ looking from left to right, and understanding a storyline.
To reach all students and languages, dual language books will be used with this listening center!
Many of my students speak other languages and may feel uncomfortable during my read-aloud sessions because they don't understand what I'm saying. I hope to break through a few barriers by having a center where their languages and cultures can be represented.
Being able to give this gift to my classroom would allow my preschoolers to be excited about reading. They will take high satisfaction in knowing that they can independently follow along with a story.
