Ms. Fernandez from Newark NJ is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need books that are at their reading level. These books will help my students gain reading fluency while learning to comprehend what they read.

"The more that you read, the more that you'll know, the more places you will go." - Dr. Seuss My students are going places, this I know, because I say so! Help me introduce the love of reading to my wonderful 2nd graders. I want to open up their minds and spirits with every book they read!
My super second graders are eager to learn and come to School excited each day.
Our mornings are filled with read alouds, comprehension activities, and skills that help us learn to read. Most of my students are reading below grade level and are struggling to read fluently My students live in a high crime poverty area in Newark. Most students do not own books let alone read at home. However, it's not because their parents do not care. Living under the poverty line has its challenges and most parents work several jobs. Unfortunately, education is usually the last on the list in regards to importance. So here is where I come in... Super Teacher to the rescue!! I love what I do because I get to make a difference in the lives of students who need it and yearn for it the most. My students crave not only an education but also love, a sense of being needed, and wanted. I want to see them overcome these challenges and instill in them the want to fight for their education and....life.
These materials (reading kits) will help my students gain fluency in reading which will help them get to grade level. In addition, these materials will help reinforce the comprehension strategies I'll be teaching in class. These are important for my students to master because these strategies will help my students understand what they are reading. Eventually, they will be able to use these strategies independently while reading. The reason I picked two reading kits is because half of my class is at the beginning stages of second grade. While the other half is at a Kindergarten/First grade level. It is crucial that I have differentiated material for my students that are at their level so that I can effectively teach them what they need to know while creating a meaningful learning experience for all my students. As of right now, I do not have the necessary materials to do so.
My constant prayer and wish is that my students either learn to read or become fluent readers by the end of the school year.
This is their last chance to ultimately learn the strategies they need to decode text since students need to be fluent readers by 3rd grade. If they aren't they will struggle for the rest of their schooling experience. These reading kits by Lakeshore have everything I need to help my students become great readers.
