I am the library teacher in a high-needs urban district. Many of my students come from single-parent homes and some are refugees from other countries.
Regardless of their home circumstances, my students love to come to school and they are always excited about learning!
Their enthusiasm and motivation to learn make me want to be a better teacher and to make learning fun for them.
Unfortunately, most of my students have very limited access to any form of enrichment activities. Whenever I can, I try to expose them to new things and broaden their horizons.
Many students come to the library every day to look for graphic novels to check out. Our graphic novels shelves get picked over pretty quickly -- with the more popular books rarely hitting the shelves. Students love the high adventure stories in the comic book format. My students have gone crazy for graphic novels!
We have a high population of second language students and struggling readers who love the format of graphic novels with pictures that help them figure out the words.
Many of our students don't want to read any other type of book.
I say let them read graphic novels and someday they will transition to other types of books. The school library should be a safe place where students can come to check out books they want to read. My goal is to keep students reading -- if graphic novels are what students want to read, I want to have a great selection for them to choose from!
