It is with great pleasure that I introduce you to my school which provides college-preparatory learning for students from pre-K until the twelfth grade in a challenging, urban, setting in NJ. I have been the K-6 technology teacher for five years.
A remarkable occurrence is unfolding in our school: math is now fun. Yes, it is true. You will not hear groans or sighs when our students begin their math blocks. In fact, you are likely to hear shouts of glee echoing through our hallways. Okay, maybe not glee but definitely a close approximation. It’s the authentic expression of joy generated by students who “get it”. Our innovative school is committed to using different forms of technology such as SmartBoards to bring math to life. This brings me to the reason behind my petition.
I am seeking support to purchase microphones. I plan to replicate a tutorial program created by an amazing teacher named Mr. Marcos. I was introduced to this model during an astonishing training session with Alan November. He challenged those in attendance to utilize the power of digital communication and collaboration. He encouraged us to harness the influential nature of 21st century media tools to motivate students.
In an effort to answer this call and contribute to the strides we have made in our math program, I plan to create online math tutorials with a math club named the "Mighty Math Maestros". This will be an empowering program for the entire school community. It works in this manner: students will use screen shots and multimedia tools to produce tutorials explaining mathematical problem solving. Students will have the satisfaction of assisting other students. Perhaps, as a result of the publicity, they will become math stars! Our student body will have the advantage of a library of online math tutorials created by their peers.
Please consider funding this worthy project and allow the Mighty Math Maestros to conduct mathematical masterpieces.
