Our school is an alternative school for children that suffer from genetic mental illness, emotional disturbances, and cognitive developmental issues, to name a few. Our students have a great capacity to love. Most suffer from these disorders due to a traumatic experience in their past that has prevented them from progressing with their classmates at a base school.
As the art teacher, my job is to help them learn to regulate their emotions in a healthy way and eventually get them back to their base school to be with their old friends.
My Project
Each year, I find ways for our students to express themselves and artistic and insightful ways. In an effort to continue this tradition, I want to provide my students with the opportunity to build masks.
These masks will give my students a chance to show others around them what they see in themselves without necessarily having to discuss it.
The hardest thing for our students to do is express themselves. While many of us take such a simple thing for granted, our children fear expression because they see being different as the enemy when all they want is to fit in.
