The Martian Project

Help me give my students the opportunity to read this amazing novel and integrate science and reading. I will be using this book to enhance my students' reading as well developing hands-on science experiments along the way!

My Students

I teach 8th grade students in a small, rural area where all the elementary schools are Title I schools. Many opportunities pass by these students due to lack of opportunity or lack of confidence in their ability to accomplish great things.

I want my students to know that they have value and are capable of becoming anyone they choose to be, regardless of their circumstances.

My goal is to provide these students with experiences that build their confidence and create in them a love of learning.

My Project

I recently returned from the Space Exploration Educators Conference (SEEC) at Space Center Houston. I attended amazing workshops that gave me many ideas on how to incorporate reading and science. This project is being inspired by the novel, The Martian. NASA is currently working toward getting humans to Mars and addressing many of the problems an astronaut may face in this endeavor. This project will allow students to gain a better understanding of these challenges and experience hands-on projects solving these problems as we read. This book set will allow my students to see how reading and science go together. As we read, students will solve many problems faced by the main character of this novel. For example, students will design and create a filtration device and come up with alternative ways of farming.
