I teach many courses at the high school ranging from Freshmen in 9th grade Integrated Science to Juniors and Seniors in electives such as Zoology, Forensics and Science Fact or Fiction. I teach a wide range of students from co-taught classes to college prep level.
My students are hard working and curious.
They enjoy working together in groups to learn new material and apply problem solving skills with new content. I enjoy working with the different age groups at the school especially the freshman.
I would love to be able to bring a cross-curricular experience to my students. I want to have them read The Martian book in our Science Fact or Fiction course. I would love to have a book for each student so they can read it both in and out of the classroom. We can read the book together and then discuss the Science facts in the book.
The Unit will culminate in a lab looking for evidence of life in "martian soil." The students will use the soil samples I create from the play sand, yeast, and anti-bacterial cleaning tablets to look for signs of life.
This lab directly relates to the National Science Standards that are being implemented this year. After we have done the lab, we can end the unit with a viewing of the movie.
