My Students

One of the major things that COVID has started encouraging students to do is THINK about the world as things are happening around them. My students just need more content to think about, though, especially from home!

A classroom library gives students in-house access to books that are on their reading level, address topics that they are invested in, and create enough momentum to jump-start much-needed critical thinking skills.

Long term reading and writing projects are a part of every single Language Arts CORE Standard set, mostly because students who are consistently reading on their own are more likely to develop higher level reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.

Long term reading projects also help students regulate emotional discrepancies in their own lives, and process emotions they might not be prepared to think through on their own through the lives and stories of fictional and nonfictional people as they get to know them on the page. As mental health becomes a more and more prevalent problem in schools, it is comforting to me to know I could hand a book to students who struggle, and show them a healthy model for processing traumatic events, turbulent emotions, and frenzied perspectives.

My Project

Aside from the benefit of literacy, books give students a uniquely personal experience both inside and outside themselves. As students quarantine, complete distance learning, and struggle to reach out in isolation, books offer enough structure for students to undergo intense and in depth thought processes that encourage empathy, emotional well-being, and general motivation to continue living and learning.

More and more often, students are struggling to determine where they should turn to in order to receive the *wellness* that books offer.

They search for it in everything they come across, but fewer and fewer students are turning to books in preference of social media or other internet sources. In the words of Ray Bradbury, books offer quality of content and information, leisure time to digest the content, and the ability to act on it. More than ever, these are the things that we should be promoting in future generations.
