I teach sixth, seventh, and eighth grade Academically Intellectually Gifted Language Arts and Reading classes in Duplin County, North Carolina. Our students come from a rural low income community. Our school population is around 580 students of mixed socioeconomic backgrounds: the majority is African American at 65%, Caucasian at 25%, and Latino at 10%. I hope to do a unit for each grade on a certain author. Eighth graders will study William Shakespeare, seventh grader will study Charles Dickens, and sixth graders will study Roald Dahl. Students will improve their cooperative learning skills in this unit. They will do reading circles on various novels by those writers. This unit will be integrated with social studies, math, and technology. After analyzing one selection as a class and one within a small team, students will be asked to produce a Power point book report. This experience prepares them for the next grade level as well as helps them prepare for upcoming standardized tests. These are not typical studies for students of middle school age so I know they will be challenged by reading such writing.
