Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students struggle to have their basic needs met at home. Often, many of them do not make it to school on time, eat breakfast, or have had a good night's rest when they start their day. Many of the families do not have enough money to buy the school supplies that were requested for the year, leaving them at a disadvantage compared to their other peers. Being a teacher at a school that is filled with families that are high poverty is often a struggle, since many students are regularly unprepared to learn, both mentally and physically.
My students are different.
Despite what happens at home, they come to school ready and excited to learn. They are able to leave their struggles and insecurities at the door in order to learn. Once they walk in the door, I see nothing but smiles. They are ready to get their hands dirty and fill their brains.
My Project
My students need new books to help them better understand the beautiful diversity the world is made up of. In addition to a collection of books about diversity, I want new nonfiction text that is written at levels that even my lowest readers can read and comprehend.
I want to highlight the many colors that people are made up of.
Coloring people is usually limited to brown, peach, and black in your typical box of crayons and colored pencils. I want crayons to reflect the many skin colors that our diverse classroom is made up of. I want students to stop asking for "skin color" when referring to peach. My students deserve to see and understand that there are many skin colored crayons.
