Our school serves school students grades 7 through 12 and is located one block from City Hall. Students live in many areas of the city. For the most at-risk students, those with habitual truancy, significant behavior issues, and histories of suspension and expulsion, the goal is to change behavior so that these students will stay in school and earn enough credits to graduate.
This year we are creating a series of classes for "life skills" where students can choose projects & activities that include history, science, literacy and art!
My Project
Students are participating in The Manhood Project, exploring African & African American history & culture.
As they read & research, students also need hands on activities that help them explore African & African American culture, inventions & music.
Students will learn about the Mancala Oware game, both history of the game & how to successfully & strategically play with other students.
After they research the Djembe Drum & explore musical sounds, students can create music & songs based on their own experiences.
They will learn more about Egyptian hieroglyphs as they explore the kits. When they visit little buddies at the neighboring elementary school, they can teach their buddies how to play mancala oware & the djmebe drum!
