The students in my Reading Intervention classes attend a Middle School on the east side of Madison, WI. Over 90% of the students come from families living in poverty; many have very limited access to high interest and appropriate level books at home. The population is culturally and linguistically diverse, including students in regular education, special education, and English Language Learners. All of the students are significantly below grade level in reading skills and would greatly benefit from having a greater variety of books to read in the classroom.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of high interest books for students in my Middle School Reading Intervention classroom. The 53 titles I am requesting include Showboat: The Life of Kobe Bryant; Guinness World Records 2018; and the Warriors Manga Box Set.
By donating to our project, you will provide opportunities for students to engage in high interest books that will not only increase reading skills, but also help them to develop a life-long love of reading.
Reading research discusses the importance of providing all students with high interest books that are at an appropriate reading level; this is especially crucial for students who come from families living in poverty. These students often have fallen behind their grade level in reading by middle school because they have had less access to reading materials throughout their lives.
