My students need a teaching table because they need a 1/1 teacher/student setting, and unfortunately I don't have enough adults to achieve that setting. I'd be able to work with a few students at a time.
I teach a classroom of ten students, all of whom have disabilities. My classroom is labeled as a Structured Teaching classroom, but functions more as a life skills classroom. My students have disabilities ranging from autism to Retts syndrome, to Down syndrome. Most of my students struggle with socialization and communication skills. Most of my children need 1-1 adult to student ratio, but I do not have enough adult support in the classroom to create that setting.
My school focuses on inclusion, so my students go out to specials with their general education peers, and they have recess with their general education peers.
We work on academic skills in the classroom, but we also work on socialization, speech, following directions, and building relationships.
My students are friendly, loving, and just want to be like everyone else. They love to play games, read picture books, and use sensory items. They also love our classroom tablets and computers!
My Project
We are requesting a kidney shaped teaching table that will help tremendously in my special education classroom. I currently have a small table (that is meant to belong in a corner of a room) that also doubles as my desk as a teach table. Unfortunately, a lot of my materials take up the desk as well, since it is also my teacher's desk. I can only work with one student at a time due to space.
I want a teaching station where I can work with multiple kids at a time (to relieve stress on my paraprofessionals), and to foster social interactions with my students to their peers.
Because I would be sitting in the middle of the table, I would be able to see their work and provide immediate instruction or prompting to my students if they needed help. Having a kidney learning table in my room would provide an efficient work space for my students to learn, as well as a good group station for my kids to interact with each other and work on their social skills in a smaller group setting.
