I am a general education third grade teacher at an inner city Public School.
My students are challenged by not being exposed to things outside of their community. When engaging in discussions about world events, my obstacle is getting them to make a connection with the world in which they live because their resources are so limited.
I am very passionate about our environment and hope that everyone that visits this lens will take a moment to think of one simple change they can make to live green. I feel that it is vital to teach our young people the importance of doing their part to save the planet. If I don't encourage them, who will? If I had a DVD player in the classroom, I could have my students watch informative DVDs which interest them much more than the text. For example, my students would watch the BBC series, "Planet Earth." This DVD portrays images they can see and have much more impact than the ones on a page created with words. This movie introduces facts pertaining to Earth, including how Earth supports life, how the seasons occur, and how day becomes night. Physical attributes are defined, such as continents, the equator, latitude, longitude, and axis tilt. To enhance the lesson, students will be able to read The Magic School Bus books that correspond with scientific concepts being taught. This will bring science more to the forefront in their lives.
It is our responsibility to protect our environment and provide a healthy home for our children and the animals that share the world with us. Your help can ensure that children's lives are being enhanced and changed by their hands on learning experiences at school. After all, school is a tool to not only educate, but to empower.
