This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My second graders are super sweet, yearning to learn everything they can and they love to move! My students attend a high poverty school, with about 50% English Language Learners.

Despite the struggles my students face, we come together as a family in our classroom every day.

I strive to support them in our safe environment through social and academic lessons. Sometimes that support comes through academic intervention, and sometimes it comes through creating an environment where my class can learn to the best of their ability!

My Project

My students still need to understand that reading is magical! They read everyday, but most have not found a passion for reading, which is one of my #1 goals as a second grade teacher. Studies and experience proves that reading is the best predictor for success in all subjects. I want to give my students the passion to be readers for life, so that they can be leaders as well. I plan to read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone to my students as they follow along in their own book. They will get to keep the book once we are done! Then they can revisit and have confidence that they can read a book as challenging as Harry Potter.
