Our students are more than just busy 5 & 6 year olds. They are the innovators of our future, who learn by listening, sharing, and communicating. When you walk into my classroom you will see a sign that tells about my students and classroom.
It reads: You are now entering the world of the 5 and 6 year old.
If our chairs are too small for you, remember they fit us just right. If you must walk around our games and toys, remember that is through this kind of manipulation that we learn. If we are noisy, it is because we are learning to live with each other. If we seem to be talking too much, remember that is the way we learn our language. If we come up and talk to you, don't be surprised as we are open, friendly, and curious. We want to know you as our friend. Enjoy our world and when you leave we hope you carry with you some of our enthusiasm for living and learning.
My Project
When I read aloud to my students I am giving them the opportunity to fall in love with reading. My students love being read aloud too! When we read aloud we are entering the world of magical creatures, characters they can relate too, and an enriching vocabulary experience. Through read alouds we not only learn language arts skills, we also learn life skills. We learn to empathize with characters and to find similarities and differences between their lives and ours. We also, just as importantly, laugh with our books! We find joy in the stories we read. There is nothing more important to me as a teacher than my students relating reading to the feeling of joy!
These books would give us the opportunity to have a rich read aloud experience and deep, meaningful conversations.
Whenever I bring a new book into our classroom, my students beam! They are so excited to hear new stories. The books that I have requested are books that I know they will love and want to hear over and over!
