Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students in my classrooms face many challenges. I teach a diverse population. Most of my students have learning challenge due to the fact that they are English language learners, have learning disabilities, such as dyslexia, ADHD, ADD, ED, autism, deaf, speech.
We have foster children as well as students coming from single parent households or living with relatives.
One common factor is that most of these students who have experienced difficulty or failure in school tend to divert attention from their academic struggles or failure in school.
My Project
The use of whiteboards is a daily activity in my classroom, especially in math. Using the whiteboard and expo markers in math, students are able to practice and to record modeled strategies. The whiteboards allow me to see exactly what they are doing, as well as provide an easy place for them to show and share their work. What becomes a problem is the fact that the markers never seem to last, erasers seem to disappear, and the whiteboards slowly become stained from frequent use.
When something goes awry, students know that they must leave their seats quietly to get a new marker, new eraser, or the last choice, pencil and paper.
Even though they are great about doing this, it is distracting for many of my students who have focusing issues and they miss important instruction form either myself or other students. By having enough supplies, students will be able to avoid all of these problems and focus on increasing their learning!
