My group of fourth graders is extremely bright, witty, and ready to explore each and every day! We live in a very rural community surrounded by woods and farmland, but we would not change it for anything.
Even at 100% free or reduced-price lunch rates, we have been ranked first in our conference for student achievement.
We are proud of where we live and how we have grown to overcome many challenges. Low-income does not equal low expectations for our students!
These books will be used as a whole group novel study. We will read The Magic Misfits together, discussing each chapter of the book. Novel studies bring books to life, often presenting children with chapter books they would never read otherwise.
When we read and discuss together, higher vocabulary and concepts become accessible even to the lowest readers.
Once students finish a real chapter book from a series, they usually become hooked on that series, and this book is perfect for that because it is the first of the series. Reluctant readers need just that- to READ. And this high interest book will help them see that reading doesn't have to be boring. And it is by Neil Patrick Harris, someone many of them already know from television.
