Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am blessed with 19 first grade students in my classroom who are eager to learn and explore the world around them. However, my students come from many different backgrounds which sometimes makes it difficult for students to be exposed to grade-level content at home. Students come from homes that are unable to provide basic supplies, not to mention school supplies. They are made up of a diverse set of backgrounds and include English Language Learners, special education students, and those receiving free or reduced-price lunches. Some of my students may even experience being homeless during the school year. Homelessness is an experience that individual people have, rather than a label. It is my goal as their teacher to provide them with basic necessities.
Seventy percent of our students receive free or reduced-price meals.
My students are very grateful for your support!
My Project
Sitting at a half moon table works like magic! Because the teacher is sitting in the middle and is close to each student, the children feel closely connected to the teacher and to one another, and are more apt to stay engaged with the work at hand. Working at this group table allows the teacher to quickly scan each student's work and to provide immediate instruction. If we had a half moon table, the students would want to stay there the entire day!
Small group work is the key to each student's success, especially when they can easily see and hear the teacher, and vice versa!
Having a group work table in my classroom would greatly enhance instruction. Students will be able to learn about a variety of concepts in close proximity such as financial literacy. We would have a workspace that is much more conducive to learning than our current arrangement. Ergonomics are just as crucial in the classroom as they are in an office or in a kitchen. Please help me create this magic learning space for my eager and deserving students!
